donna Kukama revisited a series of performances that she started in 2016, specifically related to monuments, memorials and commemorations for those who need to be remembered but are not.
We the Not-Not People! then forms part of a broader, ongoing body of work that Kukama calls a 'history book for those who absolutely need to be remembered' - a history book that is not limited to physical texts or a fixed chronology, but that takes the form of performances, interventions and installations. Kukama explores multiple intersecting forms of oppression, alongside questions of memorialisation and healing. The work comprised an installation and performance at the Maitland Institute.
About Donna Kukama
Donna Kukama is a Johannesburg-born multi-media artist working predominantly in performance, as well as in video and sound. Her work often presents itself as fleeting moments between reality and fiction that question the way in which histories are narrated and value systems are constructed. Her performances manifest through the unscripted participation of others, and often resist established 'ways of doing'.
