Kresiah Mukwazhi

Zvisaririra

Live Art Workshop 2019

In the work Zvisaririra (meaning traces or remains), Mukwazhi burnt shorn parts of her hair and performed in stillness, with a video of the birthday celebrations of her mother. She said 'I was interested in the body as a medium for memory. The scent of burnt hair remains sometimes for days on end, even when the body itself is no longer present. It’s about erasure and lineage.' (Mukwazhi, 2019)

About the Artist

Kresiah Mukwazhi was born in Harare, and studied at National Gallery of Zimbabwe Visual Art and the Market Photo Workshop in South Africa. Her artistic practice draws on personal experiences and observations of gender-based violence, exploitation and abuse. Inspired by the global #metoo movement, Mukwazhi uses her art to shed light on the common–and yet less publicised–occurrences of sexual assault in her home country and the rest of Southern Africa.
