Flatland emerges from research Into Hendrik Verwoerd's experiment for his doctoral thesis on a method for the experimental production of emotions based on eliciting emotions from test subjects using symbols and colours (Verwoerd, 1925). It explored how its outcomes could be overlaid with propaganda and media manipulation during the apartheid regime. The work takes the audience through a performance lecture that traverses the research into psychological experiments while overlaying and juxtaposing them with South Africa’s past and present.
